Playing a little catch-up posting the recent AVW strips to Tumblr just like last week’s Matriculated catch-up post, and guess what?  I’ll be catch-up posting later in the week with the third strip I do!! KETCHUP!  This past week’s AVW was for Little Big Planet 2 (click the image to read the full strip and Phil’s review of the game.)  I had a good time drawing the group of kids but had SO much fun drawing the first panel where I got to depict the AVW characters as Sackboys.  Originally I was going to draw them as I had way back in AVW number 3 where we reviewed the first game and I drew them out more as these massive mascot outfits where you could see the character’s faces. I thought I’d do it the same this time around, maybe adding in some of the fancy clothes used to dress up the avatars in the game.  (I have a sackboy now that I lovingly call Johnny Depp on vacation.  I’ll not post a screen cap but instead encourage your minds to wander!) While working it out I wanted it to be simpler.  More fun. I thought of all the options there are with character creating within the game and it occurred to me that if I tried hard enough I could probably make Sackboy versions of the characters with all the outfit, hair and accessory options.  So I drew them out this way. I was pleased enough with the result though I do wish I’d given them a bigger panel to play in.  When drawing groups of children it’s important to diversify. EX: Here’s a cute girl with a bow, he’s a jock, here’s a chubby kid, here’s a spanish kid, etc. You want all the kids to look different and I find myself thinking about this as I’m drawing them. The worst thing you can do is just draw a pack of white boys. That’s just plain lazy.  And a little racist. But mostly lazy. I was thinking about it while I was coloring the strip, I didn’t do it here but a good method as a basis for your group children drawing is to think about the Breakfast Club.  Do you have your jock?  do you have your princess?  Don’t you forget your spaz! Now just make Judd Nelson a minority and your allll set. Seriously… diversify.  Your comic will be better for it.  Below is the image for the previous AVW about boobs.
